RCW 28B.10.695 Timely completion of degree and certificate programs—Adoption of policies.

POLICY

To remain in good academic standing, students are expected to maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 for each quarter. The college imposes increasing levels of intervention for students to support academic progress and completion. This policy applies to students enrolled in courses after the tenth instructional day of any quarter.

Programs with programmatic accreditation (e.g., nursing) may require a different GPA standard for a student to maintain good academic standing in that program.

Academic Alert

  • A student with a cumulative grade point average below 2.0 will be notified they are on academic alert.
  • A student on academic alert who achieves a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher will be reinstated to good academic standing.

Academic Intervention

  • If a student who has been placed on academic alert receives a cumulative GPA below 2.0 in the subsequent quarter, they will be placed on academic intervention.
  • A student will remain on academic intervention if their quarterly GPA is 2.0 or higher but their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0.
  • A student returns to good academic standing when they achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Academic Break

  • If a student placed on academic intervention receives a quarterly and cumulative GPA below 2.0, they will be required to take an academic break for up to one year.
  • Students who are on an academic break from Skagit Valley College may appeal that status by submitting a petition for reinstatement, which is available online on the Enrollment Services forms webpage.
  • The petition for reinstatement must be submitted at least three (3) business days prior to the quarter for which the student wants to re-enroll.

Re-enrollment

  • If the petition for reinstatement is approved, the student will be eligible for re-enrollment on academic intervention status until the student’s overall cumulative GPA exceeds 2.0.
  • A student who has been re-enrolled after an academic break must maintain the requirements for being on academic intervention, and they may be subject to an academic break for up to a year if they are unable to return to good academic standing.

DEFINITIONS

Academic Interventions: Could include meeting with an academic or faculty advisor; tutoring; attending instructor office hours; group advising; study skills workshop; success plan, and/or connecting with support programs (e.g., TRIO, Disability Access Services).
