Grants
What are Grants?
Grants are federal, state, and institutional funds awarded to students based on their financial need. These funds are a form of gift aid – aid that does not have to be repaid. The following are some of the main grant funds awarded to students at Skagit Valley College.
Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is the largest federal student grant program in the United States. These grants are awarded to eligible undergraduate students whose eligibility is determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Award amounts are determined using the Student Aid Index (SAI) found on the Submission Summary page of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students can access this information by completing the FAFSA.
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant is a grant awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need on a first-come, first-served basis. Students that are eligible for these funds are usually those with the lowest SAI, often prioritizing students with 0 or negative SAI values.
Washington College Grant (WCG)
The Washinton College Grant is the second largest grant program awarded to students in Washington State. It is offered to undergraduate students that are residents of Washington State and demonstrate qualifying financial need. You can learn more by visiting the Washington State Achievement Council (WSAC) website. Students can receive no more than 15 full-time quarters of WCG in their lifetime.
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant program offers federal grants to students who are working full-time as teachers in a high-need field for a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. The grant converts to an unsubsidized loan that must be repaid if the teaching requirement is not fulfilled. You can learn more about the program by visiting the TEACH Grant website.
WorkForce Grant Programs
The WorkForce Grants department at Skagit Valley College offers funding and support towards eligible students' training and education - including Professional Technical Training and Pre-College Skills (High School Diploma, GED, Basic Skills, or ESL). Each WorkForce Grant Program has different eligibility criteria. Students can complete the WorkForce Grants Eligibility Questionnaire to determine if they are eligible. You can learn more about the different programs and their eligibility requirements by visiting the WorkForce Grant Funding website.
Emergency Assistance
Student Emergency Assistance is special institutional funding that is awarded on a first-come, first-served and case-by-case basis to students experiencing sudden, urgent, or unforeseen circumstances that require immediate attention. Qualifying circumstances must directly impact a student’s ability to stay in school. These funds can help students who need assistance with rent, auto repairs, funds for gas, bus passes, childcare costs, healthcare costs, groceries, essential utilities, technology, and more. To learn more, visit the SVC Emergency Assistance website.
