MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Community members can help support Skagit Valley College students by shopping at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op on Friday, Oct. 23.
SVC’s Cardinal Pantry is the October recipient of the Co-op’s 5% Friday Community Giving Day. Through the program, the Co-op donates 5 percent of the day’s sales to a selected local organization. Funds raised on Oct. 23 will support the college’s campus food pantry.
The Co-op, located at 202 S. First St. in downtown Mount Vernon, is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Shoppers are encouraged to plan their grocery trips for Oct. 23 to help make a difference for SVC students.
“Students should be able to focus on their education without worrying about where their next meal will come from,” said Dr. Tom Keegan, SVC president. “We are grateful to the Skagit Valley Food Co-op and everyone who shops that day for helping our students meet this essential need.”
SVC operates food pantries at its Mount Vernon and Whidbey Island campuses to help address student food insecurity. The pantries are a collaboration among the Office of Student Life, Associated Students of Skagit Valley College, and the college’s community basic needs navigator. Community donations, grants, and other contributions help sustain these resources.
