Congratulations and welcome to the Skagit Valley College (SVC) team! We are delighted you are joining us because your role is important to fulfilling the mission of your department and SVC. The enclosed information is designed to serve as an introduction to the resources provided by the Information Technology (IT) Department and will help you make a smooth transition into your new role. How to Contact Information Technology

New SVC employees are initially provided all the necessary office computing resources as requested by their departments or supervisors. If you have any question or concern regarding their usage and operation, you may contact IT Desktop Support at any time during the regular work hours.

Access to Computing Resources

Office Desktop Standard Configuration

  • Dell PC with Windows 7 OS or MAC with appropriate OS version
  • Microsoft Office Suite with Outlook configured for Office 365 access

Network Account, Email and Password

As an employee of Skagit Valley College, a network account has been created for you. Details of this account have been forwarded to your supervisor. This account will allow you to log on to any networked desktop computing stations on SVC campuses and gives you access to computing resources provided by the college to its employees. Some of these resources are specific to your department and your position as initially requested by your department.

Your Skagit Login:

  • Username is usually first_name.last_name
    Complete email address: first_name.last_name@skagit.edu
  • Password is initially set as Skagityyxxxx
    yy = first and last name initials (lower case); xxxx = last four of SID
  • Subsequent password changes can be made by either:

The same account also provides you with e-mail capabilities. SVC is currently using Office 365 e-mail services, a cloud based platform provided by Microsoft. On campus, you normally use Microsoft Outlook to access your e-mail, calendar and other outlook supported features that are allowed for use by SVC’s employees. Through your own Internet Service Provider SVC e-mail is accessible at https://portal.office.com

If the user has any concern or question with regards to using additional e-mail accounts other than provided by the college, s/he should discuss the matter with the department head or supervisor; or contact IT for further assistance.

 

Use of Wireless (Wi-Fi) and Mobile Devices in the Campus

On SVC campuses, the following SSIDs are designated to serve various groups and activities:

  • “Skagit_FNS” is a secured Wi-Fi service for faculty and staff use. Please contact IT Help Desk for access.
  • “Skagit” is for pre-configured state owned devices. Please contact IT Help Desk for additional information.
  • “MySVC” is an open network designed to provide general internet access to SVC community.

Note: There are devices that may not be compatible with Skagit Valley College's network.

Guidelines on how to configure devices are available at the IT Help Desk. IT staff are prohibited by policies to repair customer’s personal devices but can help with personal device configuration.

 

Data Security

We strongly advise SVC community members to be aware and follow Data Security Best Practices when using personal devices, public computer or other non-secured network connections. There are numerous resources relating to data security available online by searching for "Data Security Best Practices".

If you are not familiar with these concerns, we are happy to meet with you and discuss items that may be unique in your computing practices/requirements.

Data Security Breach

Data security is a serious concern with mobile devices because they can be easily stolen or lost. You have a responsibility to safeguard college information. If you intend to save copies of college-related information covered by privacy and other legal compliance requirements in other locations other than your office computer, we suggest you discuss with your supervisor related departmental guidelines as to this practice.

File Management

Data Storage/Backup/Archive

  • We advise to follow best file management practices , i.e.. save your work often, backup important data, archive those that are not needed anymore but maybe required for later references.
  • Use My Document folder as the main digital file cabinet, meaning you will save all your data in these folder. You should use meaningful naming conventions to help you track locations of your files.
  • Do not save files on your computer’s Desktop.
  • Your department might have requested for you to have access to departmental shared drives and or folder. They may have guidelines on how and what files are kept on those storage.
  • Do not use USB or external storage mediums for College data. If you need data storage or access we would be happy to provide you with additional tools.

Creating file folders or saving individual files in your root drive or desktop increases risk of losing files inadvertently, especially diagnostics or repairs need to be performed on your computer.

Printing Resources

SVCs network provides three printing resource implementations:

  • Per approval by your department head, you may have been assigned a desktop printer connected to your computer.
  • Many departments have an industrial printer, copier, scanner all-in-one model accessible by all departmental staff.
  • Pay for print services are also available in strategic areas. These are primarily intended for students’ printing needs.

Non SVC Online/Internet Technologies and Services

Mobile networking technologies and services are a continuously evolving environment.  Some are primarily designed and promoted as strictly professional environment; others are geared towards personal social mindset.

Information Technology department does not ban or unnecessarily restrict the use of these resources in the learning as well as work environment. But we strongly advice users to be mindful of the following practices:

  • If the user has any concern or doubt as to the advisability of any anticipated use of these non-svc resources, the user should discuss the matter with the department head or supervisor. Users may also contact IT Helpdesk for additional assistance or the IT Director directly.

  • Practice due diligence to ensure usage subscribes to all legal and institutional compliance and always mindful of ethical and moral consequences of mixing personal and social nature of these technologies and services with the work environment.
  • Materials that contain sensitive college information should not be kept in locations where confidentiality and expectations of privacy may be breached accidentally or intentionally.
