Whidbey Island Campus TRiO Support Services

Welcome to Tutoring! (TRiO Student Support Services Program)

What is TRiO Student Support Services?

The TRiO Student Support Services program is a federally funded grant program that assists eligible students who want to excel in college, but may have backgrounds that make this task difficult or challenging.

Opportunities for Excellence

Our focus is on helping you achieve academic excellence. For information regarding Mount Vernon's TRiO Program go to Program Services.

The TRiO Student Support Services Program is located in Old Main, Room 100.

We are here to help students help themselves to achieve academic success.

Services to Students

There are two types of tutoring available on the Whidbey Island Campus.

  • One-on-one tutoring.  Students who are eligible for this form of assistance meet regularly with a tutor over the course of the quarter. If you are interested, meet eligibility criteria, and would profit from this tutoring, have a discussion with your instructor then come to Student Services in room 100 of Old Main to complete a Tutor Request Application. You will be contacted to schedule an assessment appointment where your eligibility will be determined.
  • Campus-wide tutoring. Includes drop-in tutoring for Math and is available free of charge to all students enrolled in classes here at SVC.  Go to Tutoring Center to find out more about this campus-wide service.

College Success Skills Classes

These classes, along with one hour study skills classes that can be attended on a drop in basis, are open to all students.  Your TRiO counselor can provide you with further information about these courses that will help you learn the study strategies used by our most successful college students and how to make use of our campus technology to excel in classes.

Basic Computer Skills Classes

Ask your TRiO counselor about the basic computer skills class that is offered twice a year.

Academic and Transfer Advising

We help you create long-range and quarterly class schedules to complete your degree and prepare you for transfer. University visitations are also available.

A Plan for Success

You can find the best way to fit your strengths, weaknesses and particular living situation into an individualized plan for success.

Guidance Services

Your TRiO counselor will take the time to listen to your concerns and help you find effective solutions.  They are familiar with the new demands and unfamiliar challenges that college often brings.

Financial Aid Assistance

Your TRiO counselor will help you understand the financial aid and scholarship process and serve as advocates within the system. Additional special funding may be available to eligible students.

Unique Services

You will be provided with "in-depth" assistance that is not to be found elsewhere on campus.

What makes our program effective?
You will get to know our staff personally and receive individual attention should difficulties arise.

Comprehensive Services

Our staff will introduce you to people and programs, both on and off campus which can prove to be of great help.
